Minsk residents noticed that workers began laying paving slabs on Independence Avenue where trees had been cut down. This sparked active discussion on social media, writes the "Minsk-Novosti" agency.
One Threads user published a photo with a caption stating that paving slabs had appeared instead of trees. The post gained about 80 thousand views and more than 250 comments in one day. Many Minsk residents expressed regret over the disappearance of green spaces and noted that the central streets of the capital used to be much greener.
Some users suggested not replacing trees with paving slabs, but rather creating flowerbeds with perennial plants that do not require complex care and could beautify the city.
Minskzelenstroi (Minsk Green Construction) explained that the problem was related to the growing conditions of trees along Independence Avenue. According to specialists, the root systems of the trees were in a confined space, which made them more vulnerable to adverse factors.
Among the main reasons cited were man-made air pollution, the impact of chemical substances, de-icing reagents in winter, vehicle emissions, and the high load from intensive pedestrian traffic.
The enterprise noted that various measures had previously been taken to preserve the trees: regular watering, soil irrigation, washing of crowns and trunks, root and foliar feeding, as well as trunk protection during winter. However, these measures could not stop the mass die-off of some plantings.
As a result, it was decided to plant trees not directly in the ground, but in special pots. Minskzelenstroi believes that this method will allow for better preservation of green spaces on the avenue.
The first pots with linden trees are planned to be installed this week.
