"Widows' Bay" — Best Comedy Series and 14 Awards.
In Los Angeles on the evening of September 14, the 78th Emmy Awards ceremony — the main award in the field of television — took place. The main awards went to HBO Max medical drama "Pitt Hospital" and Apple TV comedy horror "Widows' Bay".
"Pitt Hospital," which led with the number of nominations — there were 25 of them — was recognized as the best drama series for the second year in a row. This year, the second season was released; the first season premiered a year ago.
Noah Wyle received an Emmy for the second time in a row as Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dr. Michael Rabinovich ("Robbie").
Rhea Seehorn became Best Drama Actress for her leading role in Vince Gilligan's series "One of Us".
The main triumph among comedies was the series "Widows' Bay" — the story of a small island community in New England (eastern coast of the USA) that faced a centuries-old curse.
Including the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, presented a week earlier, the series received 14 statuettes, setting a new record for a comedy project in a single season.
In addition to the main award for Best Comedy Series, "Widows' Bay" brought Emmys to Matthew Rhys for Best Lead Actor, and to Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root for Supporting Roles.
Awards also went to series creator Katie Dippold and director Hiro Murai.
Meanwhile, Jean Smart became Best Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time in a row for her role as Deborah Vance in "Hacks".
Welsh actor Matthew Rhys was one of the main stars of the evening, writes the BBC.
In addition to winning for "Widows' Bay", he received the award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for "The Beast Within Me".
Rhys became the first actor in Emmy history to win two awards for lead roles in different categories at a single ceremony.
Previously, in 2018, he was recognized as Best Drama Actor for the series "The Americans". Thus, he now has acting Emmy wins in all three main genre categories in his collection.
The spy series "Slow Horses" was presented in several nominations and received an award for Best Direction for a Drama Series (episode "Scars", director Saul Metzstein). This week, the sixth season of the hit series starring Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, and Kristin Scott Thomas will be released.
