Former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning has been arrested on suspicion of espionage. Hanning led the BND from 1998 to 2005, writes Bild.
The former head of German intelligence is accused of collecting state secrets, high treason, and espionage on behalf of a foreign power. According to Bild, Hanning purchased secret information from a recently retired employee of the BND's leadership staff to "resell it further." The federal public prosecutor is leading the investigation into Hanning and his alleged accomplice.
It is known that Hanning worked worldwide as a consultant in the fields of security and business. He also had connections with Russia and China, including state structures. Recently, he faced financial difficulties due to the bankruptcy of a bank in the Baltic states, of whose supervisory board he was a member.
