"Either Burnt, or Dry." Belarusians Criticize French Fries at Mak.by
Potatoes at Mak.by, after imported ones were abandoned, are sourced from Talachyn. Visitors to the fast-food restaurant complain: either the variety is wrong, or the staff doesn't know how to fry them.

"Are we going to discuss the french fries from Mak.by? It's a nightmare," — wrote one Threads user.
Comments revealed that visitors have many complaints regarding the french fries in the Belarusian fast-food chain.
"It's better to buy frozen ones yourself and put them in an air fryer."
Some commentators agreed that the quality of the fries leaves much to be desired.
"An absolute nightmare. Out of ten times, maybe two were tasty. The rest are either burnt, or dry, or just grease. They've gotten annoying; I'll always check at the checkout now and make a return," — complains one visitor.
"It's better to buy frozen ones yourself and put them in an air fryer. But I wouldn't say it's just a nightmare," — believes another participant in the discussion.
Some complain not only about the taste but also about the dish's temperature.
"In the last twenty times, maybe once they were really hot, salty, and tasty. Wasted money," — wrote another user.
However, there are also those who believe that the problem is not so much with the fries themselves, but with how they are prepared and served.
"The french fries are tasty. But something is broken in the processes — they regularly serve soggy and cold ones. I ask them to remake it, and they always make fresh ones without any problems," — shared a visitor.
"The Difference with the Original McDonald's is Colossal."
A separate discussion unfolded around the comparison of Belarusian Mak.by with McDonald's.
"I also thought it was 'more or less' acceptable and got used to ours, but I recently visited an original McDonald's. The difference is colossal; our fries are like boiled ones," — wrote the author of the post.
Another woman who recently visited McDonald's in Vilnius supported her.
"Our fries are very bad. And in Belarus, they can't make proper fries," — she wonders.
Another commentator recalled the times when McDonald's operated in Belarus.
"When we had McDonald's, the fries were almost the best. After the transition to Mak.by, they are absolutely bad. The only plus was that after the transition, the sauces there also became locally produced and were twice cheaper. However, over the years, they gradually caught up [in price], but the producer remained the same."
However, not all participants in the discussion agreed with the criticism. And the 'country-style' potatoes are generally praised.
Potatoes for Mak.by are now supplied by the Talachyn Cannery. For french fries, the 'Innovator' variety is used, and for the 'country-style' recipe — 'Yulia' and 'Mastak'.
