German CDU party discusses change of course after series of election defeats
The popularity of "Alternative for Germany" for the first time reached 30%.

The leadership of the German CDU party gathered in Berlin for a two-day meeting after a series of unsuccessful state elections for the party and a drop in ratings, Bild reports.
According to the publication's sources, CDU prime ministers are demanding changes in policy from Friedrich Merz – from strengthening migration policy to rejecting new taxes and taking stricter measures against organized crime. Merz himself, according to Bild, intends to insist on budget savings and seek support for his course within the party.
Another controversial topic is the attitude towards "Alternative for Germany". CSU Deputy Chairman Manfred Weber called for abandoning the previous formula "either us or them", although he still rules out cooperation with AfD. Other CDU representatives, on the contrary, insist on maintaining a clear distance from the party.
Additional pressure on Merz was increased by former CSU leader Horst Seehofer, who stated that unfulfilled election promises led to a "massive loss of trust." Despite this, in a fresh INSA poll, the CDU/CSU alliance slightly recovered — from 18% to 19%, while the AfD remains at 30%.
