Kaja Kallas: Now is not the time to ease pressure on Moscow, a new package of sanctions will be introduced on Monday
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that the suspension of American sanctions against Russian diesel fuel would bring additional revenue to Russia for waging war against Ukraine. She wrote about this on social media platform X on October 10, commenting on the agreement between the US and Russia on fuel supplies.
Kallas emphasized that now is not the time to ease pressure on Moscow, and Europe is not going to do so. On Monday, EU foreign ministers plan to approve the largest package of sanctions since the beginning of the war, aimed at the Russian military machine.
According to Kallas, more than 80 civilians have died in Ukraine as a result of Russian strikes over two days. In addition, Moscow has intensified hybrid attacks on Europe, including on NATO allied countries.
The agreement on Russian diesel supplies was announced by US President Donald Trump on the evening of October 9 after a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin. According to the American president, Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the markets of the US and other countries, another 500,000 tons during November, and then one million tons. Subsequently, depending on the condition of Russian oil refineries, Moscow must ensure the supply of another three million tons of fuel in a short period. The Kremlin confirmed the agreement.
To facilitate the deal, the US Treasury Department issued a license allowing operations with Russian diesel, which were previously prohibited due to sanctions. It will be valid until April 7, 2027. Russian authorities, in turn, prematurely lifted restrictions on the export of this type of fuel.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the agreement between Washington and Moscow "an investment in war" and urged the US to increase pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would not attack Russian oil refineries if Russia ceased destroying Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to him, Kyiv is offering the US precisely such an agreement and believes that American influence is sufficient to achieve this compromise.
