Tourists in Rome will soon be required to pay an entrance fee of two euros if they want to see the famous Trevi Fountain up close. In this way, the city authorities hope, among other things, to reduce "chaotic tourist flows", writes the BBC.

The new restriction for visitors wishing to see the Baroque monument will come into force on February 1, 2026.

The collected funds will go into the city budget to cover the costs of maintaining the fountain and servicing visitors. The city expects to receive about 6.5 million euros per year just from the fee for visiting the fountain.

Announcing the decision on Friday, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, as reported by Reuters, noted that "two euros is not that much... and it will lead to less chaotic tourist flows."

The fee for visiting the Trevi Fountain is part of a new tariff system for some museums and monuments in the Italian capital.

Access to a number of sites for which an entrance fee is currently charged will become free for residents of Rome.

At the same time, tourists and non-residents of Italy will have to pay to see the Trevi Fountain and five other attractions, including the Napoleon Museum.

Children under five, as well as people with disabilities and their accompanying person, will be exempt from the entrance fee for attractions. Tourists will still be able to view the Trevi Fountain, built by Italian architect Nicola Salvi in the 18th century, for free — but from a distance.

According to data from Rome's city hall, this site is currently visited by an average of about 30,000 people per day.

Following restoration work carried out last year, Gualtieri introduced a queuing system to prevent large crowds from gathering near the attraction.

Currently, no more than 400 people can be at the fountain at the same time.
