"This savage only knew about chimpanzees." Paraguayan senator provoked a racist scandal with Mbappé
The defeat of the Paraguayan national team by France in the 1/8 final of the World Cup — with Paraguayans playing quite roughly there — escalated into a major scandal. The cause was the statements of Senator Celeste Amarilla of the National Congress of Paraguay, who attacked French national team star Kylian Mbappé.
After the final whistle, Mbappé refused to shake hands with Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gil, who then threw the ball at the Frenchman's back. This episode provoked real fury among the Paraguayan political elite.
Senator Amarilla published messages on her social media, in which she not only criticized the footballer's behavior but resorted to racist remarks.
Characterizing Mbappé, she wrote:
"This savage hasn't even learned to write. Instead of mother's milk, he sucked coconuts, and the most educated creatures he had heard of were chimpanzees. You should have given him the middle finger, Orlando Gil. I do it in the Senate, and nothing happens!"
The politician called the athlete "a colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French, resentful, a parvenu, arrogant, and disgusting."
Moreover, the senator openly reproached her national team's players for not punishing the French forward for his arrogance: "The only thing many of us reproach 'Albirroja' for is that they didn't give him a slap after the match. And I'm not even a fan," Amarilla wrote.
These statements caused a wave of indignation online.
French forward Kylian Mbappé reacted to the senator's words.
"Madam Celeste Amarilla, you are a vile woman, unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, a country that exuded passion and pride throughout the tournament.
Because of your recklessness and blatant racism, the whole world has already forgotten the journey and historical efforts your players demonstrated at this World Cup, giving way to the discussion of an incompetent woman who creates the worst image for her country," wrote Mbappé.
