Belarusian foreign intelligence agent admits last year was "just f***ing terrible"

And I will be celebrating New Year in a very depressed and alienated state. On the other hand, things could have been worse. I sincerely hope that everything will definitely be fine.

Let us remind you that in October 2025, Alexander Lukashenka named blogger Roman Protasevich as an employee of his intelligence service.

I say: 'Well, conduct the operation, he was working undercover for those fugitives. Conduct the operation as it should be,'» he stated.

«We had to conduct an operation to detain him. Although we didn't need to detain him. He came to Greece, he was called there, he provided the intelligence officers with everything that interested us, received a task, and flew back. To where he worked, via Vilnius. We were accused of detaining an oppositionist. But he is not our oppositionist. We did not detain an oppositionist. So, sanctions were imposed,» he said.

However, Lukashenka's words about the plane were a lie. The Ryanair plane was forced to land on May 23, 2021. The national airport dispatcher testified how his actions that day were controlled by an employee of the State Security Committee of Belarus.

Protasevich and Sapega were detained, then transferred to house arrest before trial. Later, Protasevich was sentenced to 8 years in a penal colony, Sapega to 6 years, but after some time, the young people were pardoned.

It should be noted that Roman Protasevich had disappeared before Lukashenka's statement. He had not been seen for two and a half months.

Protasevich's personal Telegram channel had not been updated from August 18 to November 8.

The Telegram channel with news 'Sprava', which Protasevich created, publishes new posts regularly. But it has long been run not by Protasevich – the rhetoric and topics of the posts have changed.

Those who tried to contact Protasevich said he was not responding to messages.

Before his disappearance from the radars, he had recorded a video where he looked terribly depressed. He said he couldn't find himself in Belarus, couldn't find work, and wanted to go abroad.

On December 17, he suddenly appeared as a presenter on Lukashenka's STV channel.

Roman Protasevich once gained wide popularity as one of the editors of the popular Telegram channel Nexta, which played an important role in coordinating the Belarusian protests in 2020.

On May 23, 2021, Protasevich, along with his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, was detained as a result of a forced landing of a Ryanair plane, flying from Athens to Vilnius, organized by the Belarusian authorities. After that, he cooperated with the investigation, thanks to which his detention conditions were much milder than those of ordinary political prisoners.

On May 3, 2023, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Protasevich to 8 years of imprisonment under enhanced security conditions. On May 22, 2023, Protasevich was pardoned.

After that, he worked for some time as a welder at the Kozlov Minsk Electrotechnical Plant, then as a bicycle courier, a bartender. But at the same time, he claimed to have great difficulty finding work and that no one wanted to hire him.

The authorities repeatedly attempted to use Roman in their propaganda. They created a special Telegram channel for him, and for a time, he was entrusted with naming the political prisoners who were being released. But in the end, all these attempts were not particularly successful. How long the new one will last — time will tell.

Earlier, it was suggested that Roman Protasevich might have been recruited by Belarusian special services in the 2010s but broke ties with them after he managed to leave for Poland.

Now Minsk may be playing a complex game concerning him, to use him to discredit the Belarusian opposition and, at the same time, to get out from under sanctions for the forced landing of the Ryanair plane in 2021.
