Politician and former political prisoner Pavel Seviarynets recounted how he raised his son from captivity, and described his meeting with him in Vilnius.

When Pavel Seviarynets was imprisoned, his son Frantsishak was two years old. According to Pavel, in captivity he had the opportunity to observe Frantsishak growing up, thanks to the photos sent by his wife Volha.

Pavel himself regularly wrote letters not only to his wife, but also to his son:

“A father's role should be to guide young people. From the very beginning, keep them in Belarusian identity, in faith. He is a believer, he is Belarusian-speaking,” —

the politician noted and recalled how he changed his approach to correspondence with his son:

“I used to write letters to Volechka more often, and to him less often. And then there was one moment when Volechka received my letter, but there was no letter for him, tears appeared in his eyes, he started crying and saying: ‘Mom, how can this be? You got a letter from dad, but I didn't.’ And Volechka wrote to me in the next letter: ‘Listen, we probably need to do something because our son is very upset.’”

After that, Pavel began to send his son his own drawings. These were mostly churches. Later, Frantsishak began to send his drawings to his father in return:

“After Frantsishak started receiving letters, he imitated his dad — he began to draw churches himself, he also started drawing cities, ships, airplanes. (...) Unfortunately, all the letters were confiscated.”

Recalling his first meeting with his family after five years of separation, Seviarynets recounts:

“The first meeting was at the bus station in Vilnius. I didn't understand where the buses were arriving – I wasn't oriented yet. I ran up with a bouquet of flowers, and when friends started waving, saying ‘here, here's Volechka,’ Frantsishak just ran headlong towards me. It was quite a scene... He knew who to run to, and for a few minutes he just literally hugged me. Of course, you don't forget something like that.

“I felt his heart beating. Tears welled up in my eyes. Volechka approached right away. That's it, we embraced. Now, when Volha and I hug, Frantsishak comes and joins us, always hugging both of us.”

Pavel thought there might be some alienation between him and his son. After all, they hadn't seen each other for five and a half years, and the boy was very young at the time of their separation.

“But none of that happened. He's simply a dear person with whom you can talk about literally everything. Right now, we're playing in the room where I currently live, as if we've known each other for 100 years. It's great,” Pavel shares.
