January is the perfect time to audit your home and life. The "new year, new me" energy can transform a tedious task into something you'll gladly cross off your to-do list. The American publication The Washington Post compiled a list of 20 things to get rid of to start 2026 without unnecessary clutter.

1. Holiday decorations
Let's start with the most obvious. When taking down your New Year's decor, immediately discard broken garlands and ornaments. Also, sort through holiday cards: keep those that are dear to you, and the rest — to the trash.
2. Unwanted gifts
This can be difficult because someone put their thoughts and effort into these items. But if you received a gift you truly will never use, get rid of it. Return it, re-gift it, donate it — do it now, because it won't get any easier in July.
3. Leftover holiday food
Time to say goodbye to that can of gingerbread, container of cranberry sauce, or turkey carcass you never made soup from. Eat it now or throw it away.
4. 2025 ingredients gathering dust on the shelf
If you bought some exotic ingredient for a dish you cooked once and will never make again, it's time to get rid of it.
5. That one plate that only causes problems
It's too heavy, too wide, or oddly shaped. It never fits anywhere except getting in the way. Let 2025 be the last year you dealt with this "wonder"!
6. Reusable bags
They multiply at night, and all of us have too many. If you still have a stack of bags with 2024 receipts or a bag of bags, it's a sign that you're not actually using them.
7. Car clutter
Grab a trash bag and spend five minutes cleaning your car. This will have an almost instant positive impact on your life.
8. Broken, duplicate, or unnecessary kitchen utensils
This is especially relevant for those planning to change their diet or embark on new culinary projects in the new year.
9. Anything you dislike the smell of
Whether it's a candle, shower gel, or perfume — get rid of smells that irritate you. Acknowledge it was a mistake and free yourself.
10. Promo items and free souvenirs from 2025
Water bottles, t-shirts, keychains — if you didn't pay for it and don't use it, you owe nothing to these items. Throw them away, recycle them, or donate them.
11. Cleaning products you don't use
You don't need a whole arsenal of chemicals to maintain cleanliness. An excessive amount of products only gets in the way and makes cleaning more difficult.
12. Old slippers
Unfortunately, old slippers cannot be donated, so it can be hard to say goodbye to them. But if you've bought new ones, it's time to say "bye" to your old friends.
13. Old collars and leashes
They are to our dogs what slippers are to us. It's time to admit that old collars will no longer be used.
14. Broken suitcase
If you returned from holiday travels with a broken suitcase, repair it or throw it away. Do it now, because it won't fix itself.
15. Hair accessories for a hairstyle you no longer wear
Purple conditioner from when you were a blonde, or those clips you bought when you decided to grow out your bangs? If it's for a hairstyle you no longer have, it's clutter taking up valuable space in your bathroom.
16. Too many hangers
Often people can't keep their clothes organized because their closets are simply stuffed. Free up space by getting rid of excess hangers.
17. Rags, old sponges, and toothbrushes
All those things you put aside "for cleaning" but never use are just old trash you're storing with your clean supplies.
18. Clothes you didn't fix in 2025
This can be unpleasant because it requires acknowledging that you intended to do something but didn't. Use the "new beginning" energy in January to say goodbye to these clothes.
19. Broken electronics you didn't repair in 2025
The same goes for broken electronics.
20. Empty boxes
Empty boxes from packages, electronics, even unused containers — all of it takes up space and gets in the way. Collect all the unnecessary items from the list above in them and get rid of everything together.
