U.S. President Donald Trump published a post on the social network Truth Social in which he called himself "acting president of Venezuela." He posted a fake Wikipedia page with his official portrait, claiming that he leads not only the U.S. but also Venezuela.

In reality, in the actual Wikipedia, Trump is listed only as the current President of the United States starting in January 2025.
Trump's statement followed his remarks that the U.S. effectively controls Venezuela after American special forces carried out an operation on January 3 to capture the country's president, Nicolás Maduro. He and his wife were taken from their residence in Caracas and transported to New York.

In an interview with The New York Times, Trump stated that the United States could govern Venezuela and exploit its oil resources for a long time. Asked whether it was a matter of several months or a year, he replied that the control could last "much longer." According to the U.S. president, only time will tell how long Washington will exercise direct oversight of the country with a population of about 28.5 million people.
In Venezuela, this position is not agreed upon. The interim head of the country, Delcy Rodríguez, stated that power belongs to the people and the constitutional government, and the country continues to be governed by President Maduro's administration while he is in captivity. Nevertheless, the Venezuelan government announced its intention to begin a dialogue with the U.S. to restore diplomatic relations. It was also confirmed that representatives of the U.S. State Department have already visited Caracas, and the Venezuelan side is considering the possibility of a visit to Washington. Trump claims that Rodríguez is fully cooperating with the U.S.
The operation to capture Maduro drew sharp criticism from leaders of South American countries. Against this backdrop, Trump also issued threats against other states in the region. A few days ago, he stated that the U.S. plans to launch ground military operations in Mexico against drug cartels, but did not specify the exact timing or scale of these actions.
