Due to the threat associated with contraband balloons from Belarus, flight restrictions were imposed several times at Vilnius Airport yesterday evening, for the first time since December 6.
The airspace over the airport was temporarily closed in order to ensure the safety of civil aviation, passengers and the public — the services recorded navigation marks characteristic of meteorological balloon flights.
As a result of the restrictions, some flights were delayed, several planes were diverted to Riga and Kaunas, and a total of about 700 passengers were affected. There were also reports of disruptions in the rotation of crews and aircraft, due to which individual delays are possible today as well.
The situation was monitored by the civil aviation services and the National Crisis Management Center. After assessing the risks, the airspace over Vilnius Airport was reopened.
Due to the threat of contraband balloons from Belarus, which limited the operation of Vilnius Airport, Transport Minister Juras Taminscas was unable to return from a business trip to Brussels, said the minister's representative Lukas Paškevičius.
«The Minister successfully landed in Warsaw tonight, but the team could not get to Lithuania from the Polish capital. Airspace restrictions are in place until 00:18,» said Taminscas' representative.
