The USA is going to send ICE agents to maintain order at the Olympics in Italy. Italians are outraged

In Italy, the decision by US authorities to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to participate in ensuring security at the Winter Olympic Games, which will take place in February in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, has caused outrage among many, writes CNN.

Current and former Italian politicians have called on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to intervene and prevent the presence of ICE agents, especially amidst two fatal incidents during immigration raids in Minneapolis.

The US Department of Homeland Security confirmed that ICE would indeed be involved but emphasized that it would not be about immigration control but about a supportive role in the security system.

ICE officers are expected to support the US Diplomatic Security Service and work in coordination with the Italian side, with all operations remaining under the control of the Italian authorities. Rome also clarified that only ICE investigative units, not operational forces, would be present at the Games, and they would not be working "on the streets."

Despite these explanations, criticism has not subsided. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani tried to reassure his colleagues, stating that ICE agents would not be engaged in maintaining public order but would only cooperate in operational headquarters and in the field of anti-terrorism security.

However, former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte sharply opposed this, urging the government to "define its own limits" and prevent the participation of a structure which, in his opinion, has compromised itself with violence in the USA.

Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala stated that the city does not need ICE and that such structures are "not welcome" in Milan. He called ICE "the police that kill" and expressed doubt about the compliance of its actions with democratic security standards.

Other politicians also joined the criticism, stating that ICE agents should not appear on Italian territory. Italian media write about petitions and protests caused by concerns regarding the powers and methods of this service.

Some US citizens living in Milan also expressed surprise and concern, noting that ICE has no jurisdiction in Italy and that such a presence could negatively affect the image of the USA on the international stage.
