It became known how many civilians died in Russia and how many in Ukraine during four years of war
Russia's attack on Ukraine has become the bloodiest war of the 21st century.

The war, which has been going on for almost four years, relentlessly increases the list of its victims. Hundreds of thousands of tragedies are hidden behind the dry statistics. Not only military personnel die, but also civilians. In the combat zone, these are often accidental deaths. However, the total casualty figures clearly show which side arbitrarily shells peaceful cities and civilian targets.
According to the statement by the chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, since the beginning of full-scale military operations, 44 regions of the Russian Federation, located deep behind the front line, have come under attack from Ukraine. Since 2022, over 11,000 shellings and drone attacks have been recorded.
Bastrykin announced the number of civilian casualties in Russia over four years of war: 1074 people, including 39 children.
5181 people received injuries of varying severity, 328 of them minors.
These figures should be compared with last year's data. Ten months ago, on March 2, 2025, Bastrykin reported 652 civilian deaths, including 23 children. At that time, the number of injured was 2980 people (169 of them children).
Thus, in less than a year, the number of civilian casualties in Russia increased by 65%, and among children by 70%. The number of injured increased by 1.7 times.
At the same time, Russian state media do not mention the scale of civilian casualties in Ukraine, although these figures are many times higher.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that from the start of hostilities until January 12, 2026, at least 14,999 civilians have been confirmed dead in Ukraine, and another 40,601 civilians have been injured.
It is noteworthy that the largest number of casualties occurred at the very beginning of the war — March 2022, when large territories of Ukraine were under Russian occupation, from which the Russians were later forced to retreat.

The UN Office emphasizes that the real civilian losses are likely much higher, especially in cities like Mariupol, Izium, Lysychansk, Popasna, and Sievierodonetsk, where the most intense fighting took place.
In total, based on officially confirmed data from both sides and international organizations, at least 16,000 civilians have died during four years of war. Of these — about 15,000 civilians in Ukraine and about 1,000 civilians in Russia.
However, international experts warn: if access to all mass grave sites is gained and full verification is carried out in destroyed cities, this figure could significantly increase.
