Iranian Authorities Named the Number of Those Killed in Protests
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that more than 3,100 people died during recent protest demonstrations in the country.
«The total number of dead is 3117,» Araghchi wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to him, among them are both civilians and security forces personnel. Significant material damage is also noted — allegedly shops, banks, residential buildings, and mosques were affected.
Previously, an anonymous Iranian official reported to Reuters that at least 5,000 people died during the protests in Iran, including about 500 security forces personnel.
Mass protests in Iran began on December 28, 2025. In early January, they reached their largest scale: mass demonstrations covered almost all provinces, millions of people took to the streets demanding the overthrow of the regime. The most violent clashes occurred from January 8 to 12, when security forces, according to various estimates, killed from several thousand to tens of thousands of people.
After a wave of repression, protest activity significantly decreased: armed patrols appeared in cities, and information from the country almost stopped flowing. Against the backdrop of these events, the United States considered the possibility of a military strike on Iran, but later Trump abandoned such a step, stating that he had received assurances about the cessation of mass killings.
