A show trial for "likes" on "Odnoklassniki" held in Mogilev

On January 20, the Leninsky District Court of Mogilev considered a criminal case against a 45-year-old local resident, who was accused under Part 1 and Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code (slander against Lukashenka) for two "likes" on "Odnoklassniki" under posts about Lukashenka.

According to information from Mayday, a platoon of 24 cadets from the Mogilev Regional Cadet School attended the court session. The teenagers were accompanied by Inna Drozdova, assistant to the chairman of the Mogilev Regional Court. As a result, the Mogilev resident was ultimately sentenced to two years of "home chemistry" (house arrest with restrictions), by absorbing the less strict punishment into the stricter one.

According to the investigation, a resident of Mogilev put a "like" on "Odnoklassniki" under a post "containing knowingly false fabrications against Lukashenka, connected with an accusation of committing a particularly grave crime, thereby placing the post in free access for other internet users." Later, he again put a "like," but this time under a publication with text and an image of Lukashenka in a group recognized as "extremist." According to the department, the publication "contained knowingly false fabrications against the head of state, aimed at forming a negative stereotype and negative image of the President of the Republic of Belarus."

At the court hearing, the man pleaded guilty and sincerely repented.

The Leninsky District Court of Mogilev found him guilty of "slander against Lukashenka" under Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to two years of restriction of liberty, and under Part 1 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code, he was sentenced to one year of restriction of liberty. By absorbing the less strict punishment into the stricter one, the final sentence was two years of restriction of liberty without being sent to an open-type correctional facility.
