Belarusian woman complained she got a fungus from rental skates. Is this real?
A story about a girl who contracted a fungus from rental skates after visiting an ice rink gained popularity on the social network Threads. She expressed indignation at the quality of sanitary treatment of the equipment and noted that she would now have to undergo lengthy treatment. After this incident, the girl decided to only go to the ice rink with her own equipment in the future, writes "Minskaya Pravda".

Medical expert, associate professor of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at BSMU and doctor of the highest category, Alena Kishkurna, explained that there is indeed a risk of contracting a fungus through someone else's shoes. Fungal spores persist for a long time in the environment, and warm, damp feet in rental skates create ideal conditions for infection.

Socks can significantly reduce the risk of infection, but they must be thoroughly washed after using someone else's shoes. This is why disposable socks are provided in shoe stores when trying on shoes — for customer safety, to prevent the transmission of infections.
Furthermore, it's worth remembering that ordinary antiseptic chlorhexidine does not work against fungus. For prevention and treatment, special spray products with antifungal substances (antimycotics) are needed.
