Nina Bahinskaya Celebrated New Year with a Flag
On New Year's Eve, a resident of Minsk walked from the Academy of Sciences to Independence Square with a white-red-white flag. "I'm already at an age where I decide what I want to carry," she replied to the special forces officers she encountered along the way.

How a Music Teacher with Tights and Stockings Defeated Individual Entrepreneurs. The Success Story of Valentin Baiko, Founder of "Conte Spa"
A couple of years ago, a complex of several cottages appeared in Lasosna Park. Several wooden village houses stood here before. But now they have become barns next to modern homes. The business elite of Hrodna built their cottages in Lasosna.
"No entry" — such a sign greets uninvited guests.
First beyond the barrier stands the house of Stanislau Siamashka, owner of construction companies and a hotel named after himself. He is that figure of the Polish movement who supported Alexander Lukashenka and, in the late 2000s, headed the "official" Union of Poles in Belarus.
Next to Siamashka's house is the modest cottage of the Baiko family. To be precise, of Valentin Baiko Sr. As for the business owner himself, they say he settled in Kalbasina. Once a village in the Hrodna suburbs, Kalbasina eventually became part of the regional center.
Baiko's residence sprawls over almost 30 acres of land. Behind a stone fence, built in a herringbone pattern, stand two buildings. A minivan with diplomatic plates is parked in the yard. It's no wonder that Valentin Baiko Jr. is the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Hrodna...
Sviatlana Kurs: "I Might Be the Last Person Who Remembers New Year as Vasilie"
I'm writing to you and remembering scenes from when I was two or three years old. How they brought a 100-year-old grandfather to the TV, whose "eyes were still shining," and rejoiced, pointing a finger at "Swan Lake": "Look, Kostus, devils are dancing. Do you see, Kostus?" What Kostus replied to that, I don't remember, but he was the one who told me that ravens actually caw "blood, blood, blood!", and one should pay special attention when ravens gather in threes...

"One Nation Walked for 40 Years — and Emerged Strong. The Republic of Belarus
in 2016 will mark the first anniversary of the declaration of independence. Although, in truth, there is no real independence yet. These were, rather, years on the path to it. How much further to go? It is unknown. But more and more Belarusians believe that "we will get there." Let us wish ourselves more independence in the Year of Independence," — wrote Nasha Niva in the editorial introduction to its first issue of 2016.

We and World History
Our feelings do not coincide with what Belarusian newspapers and especially television impose on us daily. We know that the giants of socialist industry have no prospects (a different matter — pity for the people); about the type of leader — "the most humane human" — we have already read much in historical journalism. But the abyss between us and the current regime is even more global than a total distrust of official slogans. We see that there is no politics, no economics, no realities here — everything is pure metaphysics. The Belarusian state today is a dream for Freud's experiments...
