Artūras Urbelis, Chief Prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Lithuania, reported that at this stage of the investigation, 28 suspects have been identified. Five of them, according to the investigation, managed the smuggling on the Lithuanian side.
The organizers are believed to be elderly residents of the Šalčininkai district who already had criminal records, including for smuggling and illegal circulation of excisable goods.
The arrests took place on December 3 during a large-scale law enforcement operation. The prosecutor's office has already applied to the court with a motion to choose arrest as a preventive measure.
Saulius Briginas, Deputy Head of the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, reported that the suspects allegedly recruited people to organize the transfer of cigarettes from Belarus using hot air balloons and coordinated their actions with criminal groups operating in the territory of the neighboring country.
