"Belarus must not be lost to Europe, but this person is definitely worth losing." Zelensky explained why he imposed sanctions against Lukashenka
Half of his traditional evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 18 dedicated to explaining why he imposed sanctions against Alexander Lukashenka and why this happened exactly now.

"With this decision, we are responding to Belarus's clearly greater involvement in Russia's war against Ukraine. Lukashenka has become accustomed to trading away his state's sovereignty and has surrendered many of Belarus's interests. Surrendered them to the Russians. Even the full-scale war Russia brought to Ukraine, in part, originated from the territory of Belarus – this is a fact.
But for a long time, Lukashenka still refrained from direct harsh actions in favor of Russia.
However, since last autumn, Ukraine has been recording repeaters on the territory of Belarus that are operating in support of attack drones.
It was thanks to these repeaters that Russia carried out strikes on our northern regions — from Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast to Volyn Oblast. These were strikes on energy infrastructure, on our railway.
Also, unfortunately, Lukashenka continues to play along with Putin in his dangerous political game with 'Oreshnik.' This is a pan-European threat. Furthermore, Belarus continues to be used as a base for supplying components, equipment, and materiel for the Russian army.
Considering all of this, we are also changing our policy and will respond adequately to the threat. Minsk must understand this. This is a political signal with the sanctions.
I have also instructed a thorough examination of all schemes involving Lukashenka and his associates.
We will counteract more significantly and will work with our partners in the region and throughout Europe, as well as with global partners, so that they fully understand what they are dealing with when it comes to the regime in Belarus.
"Belarus — the country, its people, the nation — must not be lost to Europe, but this individual, who puts Belarus at Russia's service, is definitely worth losing," the President of Ukraine stated.
