Bear Fedya Wakes Up in Mogilev Zoo. This Means Spring is Already Close
On February 20, 2026, Fedya the brown bear, whom local residents call "the weatherman," woke up in the Mogilev Zoo after a month and a half of winter hibernation. Zoo staff have been observing his behavior for about ten years and claim that he has never been wrong with his "forecast" for spring, reports STB TV channel.

This year, Fedya went into hibernation on January 10 after heavy snowfall, and emerged from his den during the first thaw. However, he is still a little sleepy.
According to zoo staff, Fedya has never been "wrong" in ten years: when he wakes up, it means it will get warmer soon. His awakening often coincides with Maslenitsa (Shrovetide).
After a long sleep, the bear has a good appetite. To regain strength, he is given nutritious food: pearl barley porridge, bread with honey, nuts, dried fruits, and raw eggs.

His neighbor, the bear Yagodka (Berry), only slept for about two weeks this year. This was her first real winter hibernation. Two years ago, she and her brother were found in the forest without their mother: the bearess did not return to her cubs. Her brother remained in Vitebsk, while Yagodka was brought to Mogilev, where she was raised by the staff. She has become a favorite among visitors and even "sings" for a treat.
The Mogilev Zoo is not only a place for excursions but also a unique animal rehabilitation center. Lynxes live here, who appeared after their mother died in a fire. They have already produced several offspring.

The number of animals is constantly growing — there are now about five hundred of them. New residents recently arrived: a Scottish Highland cow, two emus, a Bennett's wallaby, and a Canadian wolf. Staff plan to add monkeys to the collection, and even a camel in the future.
