Political scientist, founder of the expert community website "Our Opinion", head of the monitoring expert group "Belarus in Focus" Valeryia Kastsiuhova was among 250 political prisoners who were released after the visit of American diplomats to Minsk on March 19.

The woman was detained on June 30, 2021. In 2023, she and Tatsiana Kuzina were sentenced to 10 years in a penal colony each. They were accused of Part 1 of Art. 357 (assistance to actions committed with the aim of seizing power), Part 3 of Art. 361 (calls for actions aimed at causing harm to national security) and Part 3 of Art. 130 (incitement of other social enmity).

Valeryia Kastsiuhova was in the Homiel women's penal colony. After her release, she was allowed to stay in Belarus.

Valeryia's daughter, communications expert Nastassia Kastsiuhova, has been abroad since 2020. She is currently part of a coalition with Valery Kavaleuski and Volha Harbunova.
