Migrants came up with a "know-how" to cross the border with Lithuania. True, it didn't help them. VIDEO
On March 25, border guards denied entry to Lithuania to a record number of migrants this year – 29 people – who attempted to illegally enter the country from Belarus. Previously, the maximum this year was 18 people. To deceive the border guards, migrants are developing new methods, reports the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.

In the territory of the Čepkeliai Strict Nature Reserve in the Varėna district, a group of 10 people made makeshift "shields" from sleeping bags and hazel branches and moved, hiding under them. However, these tricks were fruitless: the migrants were still detected by surveillance cameras, after which border guards, together with dog handlers, quickly apprehended them.
It is noted that this territory is difficult to cross – it has swamps and unstable ground, which is why no physical fence was built there, but a video surveillance system was installed. The migrants apparently tried to take this into account and hide from the cameras, but without success.
The detained individuals identified themselves as citizens of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan, with only four of them possessing passports. After verification, it was decided not to admit them into Lithuania and to return them to Belarus, after providing humanitarian aid.
Recently, as border guards note, most migrants are young and physically strong men who try to avoid contact with law enforcement. Their main goal is not Lithuania, but a further journey to Western Europe, most often to Germany. Sometimes they behave aggressively and throw stones or other objects at border guards.
Belarus has been using migration as a means of pressure on neighboring countries since 2021. In response, Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia introduced a "turn-back" policy for migrants and strengthened border protection. During this time, they managed to prevent the entry of almost 202,000 people, including about 24,700 into Lithuania.
This year, however, the flow of migrants is not very large yet: 111 people have tried to enter Lithuania since the beginning of the year, 141 into Latvia, and 128 into Poland. Compared to previous years, this is negligible.
