Trump announced the first Israel-Lebanon talks in 34 years

A ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese group «Hezbollah» could be announced «in the near future».

The US President announced that the leaders of Israel and Lebanon will hold talks today, Thursday.

«We are trying to create a little respite between Israel and Lebanon. It's been a long time since the leaders of the two countries talked, about 34 years. It will happen tomorrow [today — NN]. Excellent!» — Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had instructed the government to start direct talks with Lebanon as soon as possible.

NBC News and CNN reported that before this, the American leader, in a telephone conversation, asked the prime minister to reduce strikes on Lebanon to prevent the breakdown of a fragile truce with Iran.

Iran claimed that the cessation of strikes on Lebanon was part of a two-week truce agreement. The US and Israel denied this.

According to the Financial Times, a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese group «Hezbollah» could be announced «in the near future». Lebanese sources for the newspaper did not rule out that this would happen «this week» — most likely after the Israeli army takes control of the city of Bint Jbeil — a «major stronghold» of the group.
