Ukrainian officials proposed naming part of Donbas in honor of Donald Trump — "Donnyland," reports The New York Times, citing its sources.
This name never appeared in documents. However, during peace negotiations, Ukrainian officials proposed naming the part of Donetsk Oblast under Ukraine's control "Donnyland."
Initially, the term was mentioned partly in jest, but later it was used in consultations.
Ukraine also proposed creating a semi-autonomous mini-state with the status of a free economic zone in part of Donbas — this was called the "Monaco model."
This situation, the publication writes, shows how governments around the world "appeal to Trump's vanity to enlist the support of American power."
