Humpback whale Timmy is alive and finally heading to the North Sea. His rescue operation lasted two months
The touching story of Timmy was followed by all of Germany and beyond.
The animal is being transported on a barge with the tugboat Fortuna B and the accompanying vessel Robin Hood. This convoy is to circumvent the northern tip of Denmark, pass through the strait into the North Sea, and release the whale there. According to German media, Timmy is breathing, regularly spouting water, and is under the supervision of veterinarians, writes DW Belarus.
The 12-meter whale was successfully placed on a barge on the evening of April 28 by a private rescue initiative. Helpers led the animal into a dug-out channel and secured it with straps on the barge. During transportation, Timmy is in a floating dock, where he lies on a bed of sand and can move, but nets prevent him from leaving this area.
The humpback whale has been in the Baltic Sea since the beginning of March, where such whales usually do not swim. He ran aground several times in shallow waters and spent almost all of April near the island of Poel.
The story of Timmy was followed by all of Germany and beyond. A GPS tracker will be installed on the whale so that he is not lost again when he returns to the open sea.
