Woman for the first time takes command of a German Navy warship
Ute Niklas has become the first woman in the history of the German navy to be given command of a frigate. She took command of the ship "Rheinland-Pfalz" from Captain Benedikt Eichhorn.

Niklas's current task is to bring the frigate and its crew of 126 servicemen to full combat readiness after repairs at the shipyard, writes Bild.
The new captain told Der Spiegel that an "exciting but challenging phase" awaits her. According to her, she is looking forward to the ship returning to sea.
This is not Niklas's first experience serving on the "Rheinland-Pfalz": she previously served as the ship's first officer.
Most recently, she worked as an operational staff officer at the Bundeswehr's foreign operations command in Schwielowsee near Berlin.
Women gained access to all military specialties in Germany only in 2001. Currently, over 25,000 women serve in the Bundeswehr – slightly more than 13% of all military personnel.
