Imprisoned Iranian Nobel laureate urgently hospitalized

Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was urgently hospitalized after a sharp deterioration in her health in prison, Reuters reports .

Reportedly, 54-year-old Narges Mohammadi suffered a severe attack in Zanjan women's prison, experiencing very high blood pressure, nausea, and loss of consciousness. Her condition is assessed as very life-threatening.

Initially, the woman was taken to a local hospital, but her relatives and human rights organizations claim that her condition remains critical. According to them, Iranian authorities are not allowing Mohammadi to be transferred to Tehran, where she could be examined by doctors trusted by her family.

It is also reported that she experienced symptoms of heart problems, sharp blood pressure fluctuations, anxiety attacks, and severe chest pains. Narges Mohammadi had previously lost consciousness in prison.

The Nobel Committee and human rights organizations had expressed concern about her condition even before her hospitalization. Mohammadi is known as an activist who advocates against discrimination against women, the death penalty, and human rights violations in Iran.

She has been arrested repeatedly and has spent many years in detention. At the time of being awarded the Nobel Prize, she was also in prison.

International organizations are now demanding that the woman be provided with full medical care outside of prison conditions and access to independent doctors.

Narges Mohammadi has been in detention since late 2021, and in February 2026, she was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on new charges.
