This is a response to the unilateral declaration of a truce by the Kremlin for May 8 and 9 without any agreement with the Ukrainian side.
“As of today, there has been no official appeal to Ukraine regarding the modalities of a ceasefire, which are being announced in Russian social networks. We believe that human life is an immeasurably greater value than "celebrating" any anniversary. In this regard, we announce a silence regime, starting from 00:00 on the night of May 5 to May 6. There is enough time until then to realistically ensure the onset of silence. We will act mirroring this, starting from the specified moment,” wrote Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on social media.
It is unknown whether Russia will join the truce in this format. It would allow Putin to hold a parade on May 9 without incidents, but it gives the initiative in this matter into Ukraine's hands. If Russia does not observe the Ukrainian truce, then Ukraine has the full moral right not to observe the Russian one — and to have an excuse before US President Donald Trump, who earlier supported Putin's idea, expressed to him in a phone conversation on April 29, and even called himself its initiator.
“It's time for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war if the Russian Ministry of Defense believes it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine's goodwill,” the Ukrainian leader noted.
