ATM refused to accept 100-ruble banknotes from a Minsk resident. All banknotes had one peculiarity
MYFIN's editorial office was contacted by Elena, who encountered an unexpected restriction. The Belarusian woman "fed" several thousand rubles to an ATM — some of them the ATM "swallowed", while others it returned and refused to accept.
— I spent about three hours trying to solve this problem, — said Elena.
She wanted to deposit a large sum in Belarusian rubles into an account at Bank BelVEB, but the ATM returned part of the money.
At the same time, a message appeared on the screen stating that the ATM does not accept 100-ruble banknotes of the 2022 series. These were precisely the banknotes that Elena's money turned out to be.
— I called customer support. The only thing they helped me with was advising me to exchange these banknotes at a cash desk. I had to spend my personal time. Why is the acceptance of all banknotes not established in Belarus? This is our national currency.
Bank: It's about sanctions
In response to a query from MYFIN journalists, representatives of "Bank BelVEB" explained that the situation is not related to the quality of the money itself, but has a completely different nature.
The problem affected ATMs of Western brands — Diebold Nixdorf and NCR. These devices require a special software update to "recognize" new Belarusian banknotes.
Due to international sanctions, American and German manufacturers have stopped technical support and software updates to Belarus and Russia. This has made it impossible to reconfigure older models for new banknotes.
However, ATMs from Asian manufacturers, such as Hyosung (Korea) or GRG (China), operate without restrictions and calmly accept "hundreds" of the 2022 series.
The bank is gradually replacing ATMs with those that fully recognize all Belarusian banknotes.
