Russia, the US, and China are interested in a disunited Europe. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, as reported by DW on Sunday, May 17.
"Why do these states want to destroy the European Union? Because together we are much stronger," she said at a conference in Tallinn.
"They don't like the European Union, that's completely clear," Kallas added.
"But we must understand why they don't like the EU; why China doesn't like the EU, why Russia doesn't like it. This is because when we stick together, when we act collectively, then we are an equal force, we are strong," the EU High Representative emphasized.
Kallas noted that it is "of course easier" to deal with individual countries, which are much smaller in size, than with a bloc capable of acting as an equal force.
According to her, rhetoric like "I have great relations with you, but I don't like the European Union" is part of the US's "divide and rule" strategy.
Kallas urged EU countries not to weaken the bloc
In this regard, the head of the EU foreign policy service, Kaja Kallas, called on the union's countries not to weaken the bloc by concluding bilateral agreements with Washington. "I am very concerned because sometimes I see some countries going down this path. Division truly works," Kaja Kallas believes.
Since Donald Trump's second term began, a number of EU countries have sought to maintain their own channels of communication with Washington, Politico reminded. At the same time, for example, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni positioned herself as a potential mediator between Europe and the US, until this strategy failed amidst Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV.
