Popov is originally from Russia. He is 53 years old and worked in provincial collectives there. Relatively recently, he moved with his family to our country, began teaching at the capital's Academy of Arts, and staged the play "Circles on the Water" at the Chamber Drama Theater (a private project by Natalia Bashava). He had previously done a production with the same title in the provincial Russian city of Seversk, in the Tomsk region.
In February 2026, Natalia Bashava became the director of the New Drama Theater. At the end of April, she staged her first play with this collective — "The Young Guard" based on the scandalous Soviet literary work of the same name. Now she has invited Popov to work in her collective.
The director's first play in his new status was a production based on a work of Russian literature — Shukshin's "Oddballs".
Popov is not the first representative from Russia to head Belarusian theaters. In 2025, the Russian Artem Makarov became the artistic director of the Minsk Opera. And even at the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater in 2026, his compatriot Dmitry Akimov took up a similar position. These are all people who are unfamiliar with Belarusian cultural tradition.
