Hungary again blocked negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU

Hungary opposed sending a letter to the European Council and the European Commission on behalf of all 27 EU countries in support of Ukraine's and Moldova's accession to the bloc, Politico reported , citing informed sources.

According to them, this document is necessary for further consideration of Kyiv's and Chișinău's applications for accession to the community. However, Hungary was the only EU country that did not support the letter. Its approval requires the consent of all 27 countries of the bloc, so the issue will be discussed again next week, one of the publication's sources noted.

Previously, negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU were blocked for a long time by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The current Prime Minister Péter Magyar did not object to the start of the negotiation process but insisted on excluding the phrase "as soon as possible" from the letter regarding Kyiv's accession to the bloc.

Magyar noted that Budapest "does not consider it a good idea" to open all negotiation clusters with Ukraine at once to accelerate its accession to the EU.

"Partially because the ink on the documents for the first cluster has not yet dried, and partially because it would send the wrong signal to the Western Balkan countries — Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, which have been working on joining the European Union for many years," Magyar explained.
