The priest of the church in Zhupany thoroughly answered claims about the renovation in the temple where Bahushevich is buried

Photos appeared recently after the renovation of the St. Peter and Paul Church in Zhupany. The Telegram channel "Spadchyna" (Heritage) noted that the church underwent a controversial renovation, as the walls were completely whitewashed, thereby destroying valuable frescoes. Now, on the parish's Instagram, priest Artur Liashnieuski explained the situation: restorers were studying the church's earlier appearance.

According to the priest, before the renovation began, a group of restorers from the "Bastaliia" workshop, led by Ivan Miadzvedzeu, was invited to the church. These specialists, for example, worked on the chapel in Niasvizh Castle and the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Minsk, where they preserved complex frescoes.

The specialists needed to find out what the original color of the church walls was, as well as how they were painted throughout the temple's existence. Restorers made soundings on the church walls and the area of its vaults. Simply put, they removed the top layer of coating on the walls to find out what was underneath.

As a result, they found several layers of paint, but the original color was similar to white.

"Therefore, we decided to paint the church as it was originally painted. The fact that it was originally white is also evidenced by an entry in the church's inventory book," says the priest.

The priest also explains why the frescoes visible in photos from the 1930s are no longer seen on the church walls:

"These same specialists from the "Bastaliia" firm made soundings on the vaults of the altar part and on our main altar. According to photos from the 1930s, our church's altar vaults had beautiful altar frescoes depicting various Christian symbols and ornaments.

Unfortunately, when the specialists made soundings, they did not find any frescoes on the vaults. There are photos, so we know the exact places where this or that ornament was. And when soundings were made in these places, nothing was found."

In confirmation of his words, the priest shows a paper with the official report of the restorers — according to it, no frescoes were indeed found. As the priest says, the last time parishioners saw those frescoes was in the early 1980s. Later, in the 1980s, the temple was renovated, and after that, no one saw the frescoes again, and it is unknown what happened to them.

Those soundings were also made on the church's brick main altar, and there a fresco was found. That altar was once painted to resemble marble. The church would like to restore this fresco, and all the data from the soundings, needed for this, are available.

Only one thing is missing — money. For now, following the advice of the scientific director of the restoration, it was decided to conserve the altar and paint it white.
