Iran announced that it had reached an agreement with Oman regarding the shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
A joint statement by the two countries is in the final stages of preparation, said Iranian Foreign Ministry official Esmail Baghaei.
According to him, negotiations "are progressing," and an agreement will be concluded "if certain third parties do not obstruct this process." Baghaei did not mention any role for the United States, although Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the strait would soon be open for shipping.
The agreement prepared by Iran and Oman provides for the transfer of control to Tehran over vessels entering the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters.
This could be one of the biggest concessions to Iran. "A concession regarding control over the Strait of Hormuz in one form or another has already been made," noted one of the regional interlocutors.
