Couple from Grodno came to Minsk to give all their money to fraudsters
It all started with a messenger call, allegedly from the "Belpochta" sorting center: the woman was informed about a registered letter from the tax office and asked to provide a code from an SMS.
Then she received a call from a fake cyber security center employee. He stated that money transfers abroad (amounting to 10,000 rubles) were being made on her behalf, and to resolve the problem, she needed to follow the instructions of a "lawyer from the National Bank". The latter demanded she sign a non-disclosure agreement, reports "Minsk Police".
After that, there was a video call from a fake law enforcement officer. He threatened a search and confiscation of savings, offering a "safe" option — to declare the money and hand it over for expert examination.
The woman's husband also believed this story. The couple collected all their family savings — 60,000 rubles in equivalent — and took the cash to Minsk, where they handed it over to a courier near one of the capital's churches.
The deception was revealed when the couple told their daughter about the incident. She immediately realized it was a scam, which she had heard about repeatedly in the media.
Detectives identified the courier. He turned out to be a resident of a neighboring state, who took the money and handed it over to an intermediary.
