Italy suspends Schengen with Spain amid migrant crisis in Ceuta
Italy will temporarily resume control at its air and sea borders with Spain starting August 1, amidst the migration crisis in Ceuta. The measure is planned for one month and may be extended, reports La Stampa.
Checks will only apply to citizens of third countries arriving from Spain. For citizens of Italy, Spain, and other EU countries, there will be no significant changes.
The crisis in Ceuta began after a mass breach by migrants from Morocco. Spain has deployed military personnel to the enclave to enhance security. According to Spanish authorities, about 37,500 of the 40,000–60,000 migrants have already returned to Morocco. At least 57 deaths have been reported.
France has also intensified controls at its border with Spain and declared its readiness to help Madrid. Aircraft, mobile units, and drones are planned to be used for control.
Ceuta is a Spanish enclave in North Africa, which, along with Melilla, forms part of the EU's external land border with Africa.
