US President Donald Trump, during a private conversation with donors, stated that he would like to see Vice President J.D. Vance win the 2028 presidential election, The Washington Post reports, citing two sources.
"Ultimately, we need to elect J.D.," the publication quotes Trump as saying.
According to WP data, this statement indicates Trump's readiness to publicly support Vance. At the same time, as noted in the article, the remark contradicts Trump's rhetoric over the past year, when he publicly fueled competition for his favor between Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
However, six other Trump advisors and allies warned that they are not confident in the final choice of Vance, indicating that the US president voices different positions to different people and may still change his mind. Trump's aides, as the newspaper writes, agree that the president will delay his endorsement to avoid appearing a "lame duck."
Vance and Rubio have not yet announced their intention to participate in the presidential campaign. Rubio already ran in 2016 but dropped out of the race after losing the primary to Trump.
The next presidential elections in the US will be held in November 2028.
