American billionaire Mark Walter has agreed to sell a controlling stake to a consortium led by Thrive Capital founder Josh Kushner (brother of Donald Trump's son-in-law) and former Disney CEO Bob Iger. The deal value will amount to a record $12.5 billion for world sports, writes ESPN.

Walter is reselling the club with a $2.5 billion markup, having managed it for less than a year. In June 2025, he agreed to buy the Lakers club from the Buss family for $10 billion, and the NBA finally approved him as the majority owner in October.

The reason for the sale is said to be pressure from the authorities. The Manhattan District Attorney's office and the US Securities and Exchange Commission suspect Walter of tax fraud, and the businessman urgently needed capital to cover financial risks. At the same time, the billionaire retains his other sports assets, including the English football club Chelsea and the baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers.

The purchase of the Lakers club is expected to be approved at an NBA meeting in September in New York. The current record is held by the Lakers themselves with two consecutive sales: the recent one for $12.5 billion and last year's for $10 billion.

Josh (Joshua) Kushner is the younger brother of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. They are the sons of Charles Kushner, who was born into a family of emigrants who survived the Holocaust in the Navahrudak region.

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most decorated basketball clubs in the world. They have won the NBA championship 17 times. The Boston Celtics have 18 titles.
