German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz commented on the election results in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, where the right-wing populist party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) secured a confident victory, writes Deutsche Welle.

Merz stated that both he and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) were "deeply shocked" by the AfD's result, as such a high score from this party was not expected.
Merz called the CDU's result one of the party's heaviest election defeats in decades. According to him, the voting results are important not only for Saxony-Anhalt but for all of Germany. The Chancellor acknowledged that the CDU cannot continue to work with its previous agenda and must draw appropriate conclusions.
He also declared the necessity of fundamental reforms in Germany. Merz emphasized that the authorities need to explain the essence of these changes more effectively to citizens, including addressing people's fears about the future, economic stability, and social security.
The Chancellor assured that Germany's state institutions remain stable and the Basic Law continues to be in force. He promised to defend the constitution and take into account the seriousness of the situation after the AfD's victory. According to Merz, Germany will also maintain close ties with other European countries.
According to preliminary official results, the AfD received 43.8% of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt. The CDU took second place with 17.2%, almost halving its result compared to the previous elections. The SPD garnered 9.3%, the Greens — 8.9%, the Left Party — 8.6%, and the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" (BSW) — 5.3%.
Six parties entered the state parliament. The AfD will receive 39 out of 83 mandates, the CDU — 15, the Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD — 8 each, and the BSW — 5 seats. Turnout was 77.8%. The AfD can now try to form a coalition with the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance".
