Princess Diana's famous "revenge dress" put up for auction

Her spectacular appearance in a black silk evening dress became an iconic moment in pop culture.

The dress in which Princess Diana appeared at a party in London a few hours after the broadcast of a documentary in which the then Prince Charles admitted infidelity during their marriage has been put up for auction.

Her spectacular appearance in 1994 at the Serpentine Gallery in London in a bespoke black silk evening dress designed by Christina Stambolian became an iconic moment in pop culture. The media dubbed this outfit the "revenge dress".

Sotheby's auction house expects the dress to sell for up to $300,000 (£220,000) when it goes up for bid on December 9.

A Sotheby's press release notes that this is the first time the dress has appeared at auction since 1997, when the late princess sold 79 of her dresses to raise money for charity.

Morgan Halimi, head of Sotheby's fashion department, stated that Princess Diana "instinctively understood" that fashion could be a language in itself.

"Princess Diana transformed this dress into one of the most powerful messages of her life — and it happened during one of the most discussed and emotionally charged periods of her life," Halimi said.

"She found herself in a situation where her story was largely being told for her. But with her choice of outfit, she took control of how her story would be seen by the public," added the Sotheby's representative.

According to Sotheby's, Anna Harvey, who was her stylist at the time, said that Diana "wanted to look like a million dollars".

Before the charity dinner, the princess changed her outfit at the last minute and chose a strapless evening dress by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, complementing it with royal jewelry, a black clutch, and black high-heeled shoes.

The retro Jaguar XJ40 car, in which Diana arrived at the event, was sold at auction earlier this year for £66,250 ($90,000).

The "revenge dress" is expected to fetch a significantly higher sum.

If this happens, it will not be the first time an item from the princess's wardrobe has sold for a significant sum.

Princess Diana's sweater featuring a black sheep among rows of white ones was sold for £920,000 ($1.24 million) at a Sotheby's auction in New York in 2023.
