Trump offers Putin business deals with the US before the end of the war with Ukraine
Economic projects before the end of the war are now possible, as they would demonstrate the seriousness of US intentions to "reset" relations with Moscow.
The US has offered Russia business deals without waiting for the end of the war in Ukraine, whereas previously Washington's position was the opposite, envisioning the restoration of economic ties only as a "reward" for ceasing hostilities. This is reported by The New York Times, citing informed sources.
According to an American official who spoke with the newspaper, economic projects before the end of the war are now possible, as they would demonstrate the seriousness of US intentions to "reset" relations with Moscow.
A US administration official explained that Washington wants to create additional incentives that encourage Russian elites to seek peace. Achieving business agreements before the end of the war could help convince anti-American "hawks" in President Vladimir Putin's circle that the US president is truly seeking to build new relations with Russia, the official noted. Trump's team likely changed course in search of new ideas to end the war after negotiations on a possible withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from part of Donbas, which remains under Kyiv's control, reached a deadlock, NYT notes.
The US President called Russia's economic potential "enormous," but previously positioned the conclusion of business deals as a reward to Moscow for a peaceful settlement.
"They want to do business. But they won't do business until we settle the war," Trump said before his meeting with Putin in Alaska last year.
Everything indicates that the US "is considering the possibility of larger concessions to Russia," believes Balázs Jarábik, a former EU diplomat in Kyiv, now working at the political analysis agency R. Politik.
According to him, Washington is now demonstrating that some agreements can move forward if Moscow shows restraint in Ukraine. "Previously, Washington refused to sign such agreements before a ceasefire regime was established," he noted.
It is unclear exactly which deals are being discussed between the Russian Federation and the US. After Putin's meeting with Trump's special envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov stated that "economic issues and possible major mutually beneficial Russian-American projects were discussed in detail," writes Moscow Times.
