Poet, prosaist, translator, artist, and head of the International Union of Belarusian Writers Dzmitry Plaks has received the prestigious Swedish Bennypriset award, bellit.info reports .
“For three decades, as a playwright, author, and director, he (Dzmitry Plaks) has expanded the horizons of Swedish theatrical art — first at Radioteatern, and now as the acclaimed artistic director of Dramaten.Doc. He always keeps his finger on the pulse of modernity and senses the unique ability of theater to reflect the painful problems of humanity, uncompromisingly opening space for important voices and direct life experience. When Swedish theater threatens to become insular, he comes to open the doors and let in a stream of fresh air,” — with this justification, the laureateship was awarded to Dzmitry Plaks, who has lived and worked in Sweden since the late 90s.
Bennypriset is an annual Swedish cultural award of 100,000 Swedish kronor (8,800 euros), established in 2020 in memory of the renowned theater figure and director Benny Fredriksson. It is awarded to creators who work in his spirit — characterized by a strong commitment to art and a desire to make it accessible to a wide audience.
