Human Rights Activists Questioned Over National Security Threat

The KGB officer, however, turned out not to remember his real surname.

Prominent Belarusian human rights activist Tacciana Raviaka was summoned on Friday to the Committee for State Security (KGB) and questioned over a report posted on human rights website Viasna (spring96.org). The report said the KGB oppressed an activist who collected signatures for an independent parliamentary elections candidate.

As Valiancin Stefanovich, an associate of Ms. Raviaka, told BelaPAN, a KGB officer said to her that the report might have an effect on the ensuring of national security as it could be read in other countries.

«KGB officers read attentively information posted on the human rights site, but it would be good if they paid the same attention to violations of electoral regulations,» Mr. Stefanovich commented.

The KGB officer who summoned and questioned Ms. Raviaka presented himself as Aliaksandr Rubinau. However, the officer turned out to be the same KGB officer who searched the office of Viasna in 2011. However, he presented himself as Aliaksandr Mackievich then.
