Chornobyl NPP left without external power after Russian attack

The Chornobyl nuclear power plant has completely lost connection to the external power grid due to a massive shelling. This was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The head of the organization, Rafael Grossi, clarified that on the morning of January 20, several substations crucial for nuclear safety came under attack. In addition to the ChNPP, power transmission lines leading to other Ukrainian nuclear power plants were also affected. IAEA experts are currently trying to assess how serious the threat to the safety of the facilities has become.

While the Chornobyl station remains without power, maintaining safe temperature regimes and monitoring the radiation background depend on the operation of autonomous systems.

The situation around the ChNPP remains alarming also due to the risk of destruction of protective structures. The station director, Serhiy Tarakanov, previously warned: even if a Russian missile or drone simply falls nearby, it could cause a localized shock, similar to an earthquake. Such vibration is capable of damaging the sarcophagus. No one can currently guarantee that the protective structure will withstand such a load.
