Minsk resident sentenced to 10 years for a car accident in which four people died
The court of the Minsk district sentenced the perpetrator of the accident, in which a family from Russia died. He was sentenced to the maximum term of imprisonment provided by the article's sanction – 10 years in a general regime penal colony.
He was also deprived of the right to engage in activities related to driving vehicles for 8 years. This was announced on ONT TV channel by state prosecutor of the General Prosecutor's Office Tatyana Grakun.
The fatal accident occurred at the end of June. A drunk driver in a Mercedes-Benz at high speed clipped a passing taxi, which was thrown into a road barrier. The passengers - Russians: an elderly woman, her daughter, and two granddaughters - died on the spot. The family was returning home and heading to the airport.
It is known that on the eve of the tragedy, the accused was drinking alcoholic beverages with his friend. What they had drunk seemed not enough, and he drove to the store in a car. On the way, he handed the wheel to his companion, who did not have a driver's license at all. In the morning, the young men decided to visit a friend in Moscow, and the driver removed the license plates from the car. According to witnesses, during the trip, he was constantly distracted from driving and did not notice how the car was approaching the taxi at high speed. The drunk driver did not have time to react.
"Taking into account the public danger of the committed crime, as well as considering the identity of the accused, he is, in accordance with part five of Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus, sentenced to the maximum term of imprisonment provided by the sanction of this article â 10 years with serving the sentence in a correctional colony under general regime conditions, and deprived of the right to engage in activities related to driving vehicles for 48 years," the court ruling states.
