"They Arrive at the Maternity Hospital in a State of Intoxication." The Head of Kuzbass, Where Mass Infant Deaths Occurred, Blamed Mothers
Kemerovo Oblast Governor Ilya Seradyuk commented on the tragedy at the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital, where nine newborns died at the beginning of 2026.
The official spoke out in defense of medical professionals, stating that the version of medical error is incorrect, because each child had their own doctor, and they could not have made a mistake simultaneously. He also rejected assumptions about the presence of an intra-hospital infection.
Seradyuk placed the main responsibility for the incident on the birthing mothers themselves. "The tragedy that occurred concerns those infants, most of whom were premature. The birth weight for some was 600-800 grams. Some mothers did not receive prenatal care at all. <…> It's sad to say, but expectant mothers not only neglect their health, but some also have harmful habits. Of course, it's unacceptable that they arrive at the maternity hospital by ambulance in a state of intoxication," Seradyuk said.
