After 20 years, trolleybuses will return to another section of Minsk's Nezalezhnosti Avenue

In Minsk, the routes of some trolleybuses are changing, announced the institution "Stolichny Transport". And this, to a certain extent, symbolizes the return of a previous era, noted Blizko.by.

From August 17, the route of trolleybus route No. 30 "Serebryanka — Vokzal" is being shortened. Currently, it runs like this.

As noted, the route will be shortened "due to a low level of passenger traffic and duplication by other public transport routes." And now, from the side of the Serebryanka microdistrict, the trolleybus will only go to the "Fabryka Kamunarka" stop. The route will be assigned a new name No. 30 "Serebryanka — Fabryka Kamunarka".

Also from August 17, trolleybuses No. 61 and 68 "Dispatch Station Uruchcha-2 — Akademichnaya" (they share one name but travel different routes) will take a slightly different path to the final station. Currently, they run on these routes.

And from August 17, trolleybuses from Knorin Street will go along Talbukhina Street, Nezalezhnosti Avenue, Surganava Street in the direct direction; and in the reverse — along Surganava Street, Kuzmy Chornaha Street, Talbukhina Street, and further along the route. Accordingly, both routes are assigned the new name "Dispatch Station Uruchcha-2 — Akademia Navuk Metro Station".

Here is the scheme by which trolleybuses will now run.

Thus, trolleybuses will return to another section of Nezalezhnosti Avenue. In 2002, trolleybus wires were removed from the section from Nezalezhnosti Square to Yakub Kolas Square, and in 2006, they were also removed from the next section — up to Filimonava Street. At the same time, trolleybus routes No. 1 and 2, which ran along the entire Nezalezhnosti Avenue, were redirected to other streets.

But after many years, trolleybuses began to be brought back to the avenue. For example, in May 2021, trolleybus No. 1 from Zialiony Luh started operating instead of temporary bus No. 921: it travels along Nezalezhnosti Avenue from Kalinouskaha Street to "Maskouskaya" metro station. And from June 2022, trolleybus No. 22 was extended from Viery Kharuzhai Street all the way to Loshytsa, so now these "horned ones" run along the section from Yakub Kolas Square to Nezalezhnosti Square.

After the changes to routes No. 61 and 68, trolleybuses will again run along most of Nezalezhnosti Avenue, starting from Nezalezhnosti Square and extending to Rusiyanava Street in Uruchcha. Only two sections will remain without trolleybus traffic: from Yakub Kolas Square to Surganava Street ("Akademia Navuk" metro station); from Talbukhina Street ("Park Chaluskintsau" metro station) to Valhahradskaya Street ("Maskouskaya" metro station).

It should be noted, however, that the removed trolleybus wires have not been returned to the avenue and there are no plans to do so. On routes No. 1, 22, 61, and 68, trolleybuses with increased autonomous range, which can travel several kilometers without "horns" (i.e., off-wire), solely on batteries, are operating and will continue to operate. However, from Filimonava Street to Rusiyanava, trolleybus wires are strung above the avenue.

On the map, the trolleybus sections of Nezalezhnosti Avenue are marked, considering the route updates on August 17:

  • blue — no wires, trolleybuses run on batteries;
  • green — trolleybuses run under wires;
  • red — no trolleybus traffic.
