Tonight will be the peak of the Perseids — an active meteor stream, thanks to which the sky will be lit up by bright streaks from "shooting stars".
This year, the meteor shower perfectly coincides with the new moon, which will ensure a dark sky, and the Moon's light will not obscure the meteor trails. Several tens of meteors per hour are expected; one can only hope for good weather.
The Perseids are active annually from July 17 to August 24, when the Earth passes through the debris of Comet Swift-Tuttle. It returns to the inner part of the Solar System approximately once every 133 years.
The peak intensity of the Perseids is expected on the night of August 12-13, and the maximum number of meteors can be seen from 5 to 7 AM.
"Shooting stars" could also be observed last night: photographer Alexander Shnarov took several pictures of the night sky with flying meteors and shared them with Onliner.
And tonight, a solar eclipse is expected.
